I think.
I was going to make an effort to take pictures of the process and have a nice little fixin write up for my oppo friends, but I ended up doing it in the pouring rain. So I did it real fast and this is the only pic. There is an easier way to do this (generator to alternator swap) but that’s not what we did. Instead of going to a self regulated 1-wire modern alternator, we only upg r aded from 1964 to 1967 style charging system.
The alternator, bits of wire harness and new exter
nal voltage regulator came from a 67 ranchero that’s had the 1 wire conversion done. The alternator was already
in, with its 67 wiring. I had to ad a wire to the harness to use the alternator regulator as the generator setup uses one less. It was raining on and off and then really raining after that so it got done on the fast. T
hen we put the battery in and it started and seeminly charged. It was only at 12.5 volts and I’d like to see a healthy 13 but it was creeping up not down so I’m calling it a victory. If not I’ll know by tomorrow because this was what was keeping him from driving it.

Good swap. Now you can install that monster sound system! Or not, but at least the headlights won’t dim at idle. I went one-wire but I rewired the whole car so there was no reason not to. I wonder if there’s a market for old externally regulated alternators?

that’s what I thought I’d be doing, had to think about this one a bit, and I’m not totally convinced I’ve got it solved, as I’m more familiar with old GM than Ford but we’ll see.
